Position Overview :
The System Administrator (SysAdmin), under the supervision
of the Technical Manager, works independently to develop
and maintain all of the company's and clients' Computing
operational systems. The SysAdmin is responsible for
maintaining the integrity and security of all servers
and systems. The SysAdmin also develops programs and
support systems for the company's Linux & other servers
co-located at remote data centers. The SysAdmin is
expected to conduct system analysis and development,
with limited support and direction from professional
staff, to keep our systems current with changing technologies.
The SysAdmin is responsible for emergency response
as needed to correct system failures, in coordination
with the Senior System Analyst, and the Technical
Manager. The SysAdmin oversees the maintenance of
all the company's and clients' office machines and
educates all staff in the use of the servers operating
platforms, both as a server and a client operating
system.
The System Administrator must possess extensive experience
in Unix system administration. As new technologies
emerge and impact our systems, the System Administrator
is expected to learn these technologies very quickly
and resolve any problems involved in integrating new
technologies with our systems.
The System Administrator is a key technical resources
for other Senior Staff, providing advice, training
and technical support for various projects. In addition,
the System Administrator works closely with professional
technical staff in the IT management team in evaluating
current systems and making decisions on future development.
Qualifications :
Required: previous experience; effective communication
skills and the ability to interact professionally
with a diverse group of clients and staff; demonstrated
success with administrative and organizational skills;
ability to work productively in teams; experience
prioritizing tasks; extensive experience working with
Linux; experience with at least one version of Windows
and at least one version of Mac OS; previous programming
or scripting experience; ability and motivation to
learn new technologies quickly and with minimal support
and guidance; good problem solver; minimum GPA of
2.3.
Preferred: previous experience; proficiency with UNIX
(e.g. Linux, NetBSD, OpenBSD), Windows 98, 2000 and
XP, and Mac OS X operating systems; understanding
of the administration of SQL database servers such
as PostgreSQL and MySQL, and secure web servers such
as Apache with mod_ssl; knowledge of Perl and CGI
scripting; working knowledge of shell scripting (i.e.
Bourne shell or C shell); knowledge of standard backup
infrastructures, UNIX system and program installation,
compilation and configuration; system-level security
procedures; talent at diagnosing and remedying serious
server related problems and/or failures promptly and
effectively; familiarity with cryptography tools e.g.
secure shell, gpg/pgp; experience maintaining servers
for standard internet services such as DNS, NFS, DHCP,
Samba, LPR printing, mail, web, and FTP service; previous
experience teaching or training others; preferred
GPA of 2.3 or greater.
